Using the themes, please explain the major differences between Eastern and Western Europe during the time of the Byzantine Empire.
The major differences between eastern and western Europe during the time of the Byzantine Empire was religion, conquest, art, and trade. The east did not recognize the Pope in their religion thus creating a divide between Europe. The east consisted of Monguls and Muslims, and they would later expand their empire from Russia to France, thus leading to a Renaissance in Western Europe. The art of the east consisted of vibrant colors and symbols that determined the divinity of a religious figure. The west however, used more simple materials like stone and it was less vibrant but it still showed divinity through symbols such as a cross rather than a gold background or a halo. Lastly, the east had more access to trading networks because of the surrounding seas connecting them to parts of the world such as Scandinavia and Russia as well as western Europe. The west was behind in advancements due to the lack of large trading networks to the east.
The differences between the East and West during the Byzantine Empire were religion conquest and trade. Religion was split into Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox. The churches leaders were in Rome (west), therefore the east did not have contact with the Pope. Religion also had influences in art. Art during the Byzantine Empire was based on Religion. The Eastern part of Europe’s art was very vibrant and colorful, while the West was very simple and to the point. Constantinople was located in a great position for trade. Therefore it became a great trade city for the East. It had access to all of Europe through the Mediterranean and also to Russia through land. North Africa was also a possible trade network. Meanwhile the West was behind due to smaller trade networks. Both regions had trouble expanding any larger. Their type of conquest was more protection rather than expansion. Both regions had threats; the West had an internal threat from barbarians, while the East had outside invasion threats from Muslims, and Mongols.
The Byzantine empire differentiated between the east and west in many ways. One of the main differences between the regions was catholicism. The east didn’t recognize the pope, had a non-secular government, and were more leniant when it came to priests remaining selibate and marrying. The west however practiced a more orthodox form of catholicism in which they followed the pope, believed religion was tied into government, and priests had to remain selibate. The west was also considered much lighter and happier when it came to culture and art, however they were also much less wealthy than the east. Trade was also a significant difference between the two regions. Due to location, the east was able to trade with neighboring empires such as the Chinese, Persians, and Indians. Because of this, the region was able to experience a great deal of influence from other empires, while the west remained not as advanced.
The west and the east from the Byzantine Emprire had varying views between trade, and religion. Trade was more common in the east because it had more of an ideal location. They traded with Persia, India and China. The west was less of an ideal location for trade because they could only trade north so they didnt have the technology that the west did. They did develop at a later time, however it was slower to grow, leading to a slower advance. Religion was also a big factor on the rise of the Byzantine empire, however, both sides had vary views. Both these sides believed in catholocism. However, the east did not recognize the Pope, they did not selibate, priests were able to marry, thi led to a secular government. Their religious artwork was drak, and protrayed gods as being wealthy. In the west, they believed in a pope, religion was tied into politics, and their artwork was mucn more lighter and more chill and gods were portrayed to be less holy. The eastern part of the Byzantine empire was more advanced in many aspects compared to the western section so they were able to flourish.
The vast territory of the Byzantine empire caused many differences in culture, conquest, and trade between the East and the West. Culturally, both sides practiced Christianity as a religion, but the East practiced Eastern Orthodox and the West Roman Catholicism. The East and West developed separate religions because the Western pope was situated far from the East. Unlike the West, the East also had a non-secular government and allowed priests to marry. The cultural differences in religion also caused differences in the arts of the two territories. Both the East and West focused their art on religion, but the East was more decorative and the West more simplistic. Trade also effected the East and the West. The East was in the center of many trade networks; therefore received ideas faster than the West. This caused the West to be less advanced. Lastly, the East and the West had different invading threats. The East fought off the civil and organized Muslims (Islaamic Empire) and the Mongols. The West dealt more with internal factions… the barbarians. The East and West regions of the Byzantine empire developed differently because of their different location and environments.
The major differences between eastern and western Europe
during the Byzantine Empire was trade and culture, which included religion and art. The east had more easy access to trade because of their conveinent surroundings. The west however did not have an environmental advantage like the east, this made it hard for them to trade freely with different counttries. Due to this lack of trade, they fell behind in advancements. The relgiion of both the east and west was christianity. However in the two different regions, both had different ways of approaching christianity and their own specific rituals and beliefs. For example, the east did not recognize the Pope as the head of the church but rather he was acknowledged as the first amoung equals. Another example is that eastern orthodox preists could marry. Since the majority of the art in the east and west was religious, in both the east and west, it reflects the outlook that both had upon their religion. The west was more dark and sad looking which tells us that more emphasis was placed on suffering and less was placed on divine majesty like the east expressed. This expresses that the west was probably more of a pessimistic culture than the east. These are just a few of the major thigns that define the split between the west and east of Europe during the Byzantine Empire.
During the time of the Byzantine Empire the differences between eastern and western Europe were culture, conquest, and trade. Religion and art were big in both the eastern and western cultures, but they were different in many ways. First, the art in the east was highly religious, while the art in the west was not focused on religion as much, and the art work was simpler. As for religion, the east and west were both catholic, but the east was eastern orthodox and the west was roman catholic. In the Eastern orthodox there was no pope, and in the roman catholic church there was a pope, and in the west religion played a big role in government. Conquest was different in the east and west because in the east they were afraid of being invaded by the Islam Empire and the Mongols, while in the west they had barbarians that they had to ward off. Trade in the east was different from trade in the west because in the east they were able to trade with Scandinavian countries which led to trade with Russia, and the west didn’t do a lot of trading. Also, the east became more developed before the west because they were able to trade with so many different countries.
There were many differences between the East and the West during the time of the Byzantine empire. One big and the most important was the differences in their religon. The religon in both were Christianity, but both had a differnt kind of Christianity. The East was Roman Catholic and the Wast were orthidontic. In the East, they followed the pope and had differnt desighns in the church. In the West, they did not follow the pope, tied the church in with the government and had a more simpler look . Which beings me to my next point, the difference in the art. In the East, The paintings were painted in bright vibrint colors, which is a symbol of divinity. Also the chuuchs had great painting on the wall in the inside had gold plated on them. The West had a more simpler look. Their religous depictions were in stone and their churchs were not covered in glod they were just stone buildings. The East had an easier trade network then the West. The East had the sea and they boudered the Middle East so they could trade with them. The West had a harder time trading. If they wanted to trade with areas such as the Middle East, they would have to cut across the eastern part of the state. On the bright side, they could trade with Russia and other northern countries.
The differences between the East and West during the Byzantine Empire were conquest, religion, and trade. As the empire expanded throughout the Mediterranean, they became greatly threatened by outside civilizations surrounding their empire. The difference was that in the west, their empire was attacked by barbarians. In the west, the empire was attacked by more organized civilizations like muslims and mongols. Religion was also different in the west and east. The religion in the west was more orthodox and also tied in with the government. Also, the priests were able to marry. In the east, they did not reconize the pope. They also had a non-secular government. The last difference between the west and east was trade. The west became behind in advances because of the lack of a trade network to the east. The east however, had more access to other places around them and brought ideas to the Byzantine Empire.
The Eastern and Western portions of Europe in the time of the Byzantine Empire were very dissimilar. The major differences between the East and West were manifested in religion, trade, art, and conquest. The East and West differed in their religious beliefs. The East was strongly Eastern Orthodox and the West was Roman Catholic. The religious rift began to grow when the East did not acknowledge the Pope as a religious icon, and the West did. Quarrels began over different views such as whether priests could or could not marry. Trade was another area in which the East and West differed. The East had many more opportunities, initiating trade from places such as Russia and Scandinavia. The East also had one of the most important trading cities in the world at this time, Constantinople. The West, on the other hand, did not have many trading options and was mostly surrounded by more barbaric civilizations. Art was also a point of difference. The East developed a more religions and elaborate art form, while the West’s art was more simplistic. Finally, the two were different in their style of conquest. The area in the West was more dangerous and they were pressed from all sides by more barbaric enemies. The East, however, was more civilized even though they were still pressed by the Islamic Empire and the Mongols. One way the East and West were similar in the area of conquest was that they both were very protective in that they did not try to expand into other areas and their strategies were more defensive in nature. The East and West were very different during the time of the Byzantine Empire.
The major differences between the western region of the Byzantine Empire and the eastern region of the Byzantine Empire deal with culture; religion and art, and trade. The main religion in east and west regions of the Byzantine Empire was Catholicism. However, there were some main differences within the religion. The eastern region did not recognize the Pope. Also, the eastern region had a secular government, whereas the the western region believed that religion tied into politics. The art found in the western region was more vibrant whereas the eastern region’s art is more basic, yet 3D. The final difference between east and west Byzantine Empire is trade. As with other empires, successful trade is based upon location, location, and location. The eastern region of the Byzantine Empire had more successful trade than the western region due to their location. The Eastern region was able to trade with the Persian Kingdom, the Chinese, and inhabitants in the modern day Middle East. The Western region of the Byzantine Empire only had access to two major kingdoms, although it lied on the Mediterranean Sea.
The Byzantine Empire consisted of two sections: the East and West. Even though these two components were of the same empire, they differed greatly. These differences include three themes: religion, art, and trade In the East, religion was mainly Roman Catholic, while the West encompassed orthodox. Art also differed. The west encompassed bright and majestic paintings of Jesus, which demonstrated their love for religion. However, the East had religious art as well, yet it was not as eminent as the West’s. Finally, trade also contrasted. The East was not close to Constantinople, the Empire’s trading capitol, so trade and technology was transferred much more slowly than that in the West. The Byzantine Empire was a very substantial and influential empire, yet it lacked a sense of unity.
The East and West differed in conquest and culture .At the time of the Byzantine Empire the East had conquered a lot more land. The major differene between the East and the West was the differece in religion. Both sides practiced Christianity but they each practiced a different branch. The people in the West were Roman Catholics and the people in the East were Orthodox. A major diference between the two branches of religion was that the Eastern or Orthodox priests didnt follow the same rules that the priests in the West followed. Orthodox priests could marry while Roman Catholic priests could not. Another major difference was that the Eastern Orthodox didn’t see the pope as the supreme priest/ruler and didn’t follow all his religious beliefs. The religious arts of the East and West also differed. In the West the religious art was happier and more simple. While in the East the religious art often displayed sad people and was much more elaborate. These examples show the differences among the Byzantine empire
During the Middle Ages, the Byzantine Empire covered a land mass consisting of both Western Europe and Eastern Europe. Although under the same administration, the Eastern and Western halves of the empire became dissimilar and soon divided from one another. Religion was the focal point in that Eastern Europe followed the views of Eastern Orthodox Christianity, while Western Europe, the laws of Roman Catholicism (Christianity). This meant that in Eastern Europe, factions did not recognize the pope for their leader as done in Western Europe. Also, governing of the East was secular, as religion stayed out of the politics, while the West was the opposite, as their religion was in complete control of everything and under the feudalist structure. As a result, hostility between both parties arose as well as their own takings on the topics of trade, conquest, and art. With trade, the West was inferior to the East, where due to their prime location in close quarters with civilizations throughout Europe, Africa, and Asia, they were able to get ahead of their rivals and more easily advance. Unfortunately for the West, there was not as much variety with who to trade with so accommodations had to be made. Although there was not much conquest for the either side, focusing their attempts on defense, both the East and West had different standpoints on the matter. Western Europe was a congested area with many civilizations sprouting up at the same time, so barbarians and possible invasion were continuous thoughts for the West as many of its enemies were at their strongest. In contrast, Eastern Europe was less crowded and more protected, even with some nearby threats such as the Mongols and Muslims. Regrettably, once the Crusades are launched and along with the progression of time, the fertile flatlands of the East will bring about its demise. As far as art goes, the West depicted a simplistic manor of expressing themselves while the East had a more decorative tone with a higher religious mood as well. Surprisingly, despite being split physically and in how every society should work, the Byzantine Empire was able to thrive and was among of some of the greatest civilizations of its time.
The main differences in the East and West were the religion, trade, and art. Religion, while both Christianity, differed between the sides. The West, under Roman Catholocism, head a Pope and religion played a big role in government, a feudalism. The priests also had different rules. In the East the Orthodox priests had less rules to follow, and didn’t follow Papal order. They also had a secular government, and religion and government stayed seperate, didn’t mix. Trade greatly influenced the divide between the East and the West. While the East had trade networks with China and India, the large empires of the time, the West only had trade with Germanic tribes. This led to the East having many more advancements and cultural and technological growth, and the West remaining more simplistic and not as wealthy. This spilled over into art as the East had heavier and more vibrant art, with mch more symbolism and signs for wealth and power. The West had lighter art, and it was much more simplistic. They used simpler mediums, and didn’t have things such as gold. Also, the divinity in the East was expressed through halos and scripture, and in the West by crosses.
There were three major differences between the eastern and the western sections of the Byzantine Empire; religion, art, and trade. Even though the east and the west both practiced Christianity as a religion, each side however shared a difference in the branch of Christianity they practiced. While the east was Orthodox, and did not reconize the the Pope as a religious icon, the west was Roman Catholic, and did follow the Pope. Also, the east had a non-secular government allowing priests to marry, while the west did not. Art was also a difference that set the two sections apart. For example, in the east the art was very elaborate, and used bright colors to show athority. However in the west the art was more simplistic. Lastly, trade was shown as a difference between the east and west. Between the two sections, the east was the side that had more success with trade. This was because the east was closer to areas, like Scandinavian countries, that used trade often. This allowed the east to get more outside ideas, which allowed them to become more successful than the west.
Eastern Europe and Western Europe differed greatly during the time of the Byzantine Empire, especially pertaining to five main themes, conquest, religion, art, trade and government. Relating to conquest, the East was civilized although they were still threatened by the Mongols and the Islamic Empire, while in the West, it was more dangerous because of invading barbarians in the surrounding areas. The culture of these regions differed greatly due to religion, which influenced many other aspects of culture. Eastern Europe was Eastern Orthodox and did not follow after the Pope, while the West was Roman Catholic. Religion of the regions influenced the art that each produced. In the East the art was religious, rather than the west’s art form which was simple. Because the East was located near more large empires which were technologically and culturally advanced, the East traded with the empires which then made Eastern Europe more advanced than the West. The West was at a loss due to the location near no large empires that were advanced. The government in the East remained secular because the religion had no influence on the politics, while the government in the West was feudalistic because it was under the full influence of the religion.
The major differences between the East and West during the extent of the Byzantine Empire were the culture, conquest, and trade. In the West, religion consisted more of the Roman Catholic Church as the Eastern Othodox Church dominated the eastern part of the empire. Part of the reason for the division was because the eats would not recognize the pope in the Roman Catholic Church so religion would interfere with politics. The east was more sectional space for the government relying on organization, and nothing was based on social status. However, the west consisted of feudalism and religion tied into the politics. The art in the east was very symbolic and highly religious and decorative. The paintings consisted of bright, vibrant colors without any darkness. The art of the west consisted more of sculptures than paintings and were more simplistic. Also, Constantinople, located in the eastern part of the empire, provided a centralization in the trade network as it is located near both the Mediterranean and Black Seas as well as bewteen Western Europe and South of the empire. This contributed with access to the further east providing more riches from natural resources. As the ideas pass from the east, the west are far behind in advancements due to the lack of a large trade network to the east. Conquest in the east was less tense as all the civilizations were more spread out and more civilized. However, the foreign invaders that were an extreme threat to the east were the muslims and mongols. To the west it was more dangerous as there were internal factions such as barbarians. In conclusion, the east and west of the Byzantine Empire differed through culture, trade, and conquest.
The East and West regions of the Byzantine Empire differed in several important aspects of civilization, causing them to divide. One major aspect on which the East’s views differed from the West’s was religion; the East did not accept the Roman Pope as their religious leader. The East split off from the West creating two branches of Christianity: Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic. In the West, religion was central in the society and the government in the feudal system. In contrast, the East created a secular government hierarchy, separating church and state. Art in the East depicted religious figures in elaborate paintings using ornate detail and gold leaf. The West’s economic burdens were represented in its more simplistic form of art. The West defended itself from invading barbarians in Western Europe, while the East fought more civilized groups like the Muslims and the Mongols. Finally, the East was more prosperous than the West because of its extensive trade routes, with access to Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and the Mediterranean. The West was behind the East technologically and did not catch up with the East until the Renaissance.
The Byzantine Empire had substantial cultural differences between the East and West. While the East was more civilized, the West was more religiously focused. Christianity, more specifically Catholicism represented a great divide among these people. The East did not recognize the Pope, and they kept their government secular. This differed from the West whom tied politics directly to religion. This cultural divide led each region to different developments in conquest and trade. While the East expanded into Russia the West stayed focused on protection and not advancement. With new outside influences the East excelled ahead of the West. This furthered the divide between the two cultures. This Empire would not be united again until the Crusades.
The key differences between the east and west regions of the Byzantine Empire were their culture, factors relating to conquest, and trade. The cultural differences between the two territories were mainly evident in religion and art. They way in which the east observed Christianity greatly differed from the way the west did. In the eastern territory, the people practiced Eastern Orthodox view of Christianity opposed to the western territory, which practiced Roman Catholicism. The Eastern Orthodox did not recognize the Pope, whereas the West did strongly. Also, the west practiced feudalism and also tied religion into their politics unlike the east that had a secular form of government. The west expressed art in a more simplistic manner than the east. The eastern art was highly religious and elaborate. The main focus was on the religious figure or scripture, which consisted of brilliant colors, and detailed Christian symbols. Although the east and west both feared invasion, the west worried about internal factions such as barbarians unlike the east who was more civilized, although both the Mongols and Muslims targeted them. The eastern section on the Byzantine Empire was more culturally and technologically advanced than the west. This was due to the fact that the east was geographically located near more advanced civilizations (such as China and Russia) than the west. New ideas were brought to the east from these civilizations, leaving the west behind in advancements. In all, trade, conquest, and culture were the main aspects that divided the east and western area of the Byzantine Empire
The major differences between the Eastern and Western Europe during the time of the Byzantine Empire are religion, culture, trade, and conquest. Religion is a ery big difference between Eatern and Western Europe duing the Byzantine Empire. One very big difference is that the East did not agree that the Roman Pope should be their religouse leader. The East branched off from the West and created two branches of Christianity, Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic. In the West, religion was based around the Roman Catholic. Religion of these regions influenced the arts in their own ways. The East had alot of religous figures in devine paintings using many detail and gold leaf. They had very high rich gold backrounds showing that the East was wealthy. The West’s paintings were more of a simplistic for of art showing their econmics. because the East was located near more large empire, which were technologically, and cutually advanced the East joined their trading network, which made Eastern Europe more advanced then the West. The West advanced more slowly due to the location, they were near no large empiresthat were advanced. Conquest in the East was less at risk because all the civilizations were more spread out and more civilized. Although, the foreign invaders were a threat to the East were the muslms and mongols. The West was more at danger as there were more invaders for example barbarians. As shown, the East And West of the Byzantine Empire differed through religion, culture, trade, and conquest.
The major difference between the east and west was religion. The east didn’t feel that the pope was important this created turmoil between the two sides. This lead to disagreements about other things such as government, the western government was run by the religious figures such as the pope who the eastern people didn’t agree with so they had a government that was separate from the church which was more successful and helped the eastern side to expand to a much larger size than the western side. This lead to the eastern side controlling the trade routes which helped keep a sense of continuity and allowed technological advances from the more successful empires such as China and India. The western side didn’t acquire these technological advances therefore they couldn’t be as successful as the east. Most of these things can be attributed to the fact that the western people placed too much control in their religion whereas the east did not.
There are several major differences between the Byzantine Empire and Western Europe, which are based around the themes of culture, trade, and conquest. After the fall of Rome, Europe split up into the East, which was still influenced by the ancient Roman innovations, and the West, which went into a dark age. The religion of the Byzantine empire differed from the West’s view of Christianity because it had no pope and had a more dark theme to it, which is shown many times in its art. It was the main reason that kept Europe divided. Also, while religion was strongly tied to government in the West, the Byzantine Empire made sure that religion and politics stayed separate. Because eastern Europe was more culturally advanced, they had an organized bureacracy, while the west mainly had simple feudal systems. The West was underdeveloped and didn’t trade much, but the Byzantinians traded with places like Russia and Scandinavia, which helped them gain resources and ideas to develop their civilization. This made the East more wealthy and advanced. In eastern art, many drawings and paintings were related to religion, but although they were very complex, they put images in a dark perspective. In contrast, the West had art that represented a more optomistic point of view. For conquest, the East was more defensive, as it had to defend against the barbarians that had brought down Rome and more civilized peoples such as the Mongols and Muslims. The West was much more threatened by barbarians. These themes of trade, culture, and conquest show how the divide of Europe made the East and West into distinct and different cultures.
During the Byzantine Empire, the east and west were different from each other in many ways. The major differences included culture, trade, and conquest. First, the culture was different. In the east, Constantinople ran the empire, which was more civilized during its cultural renaissance. The west was ran by Vatican City, and was more dangerous with all the different enemies. Both cultures belived in catholic orthodox, but the east did not recognize the pope. This not only caused the split between the empire, but changed the goverments. In the east, The goverment was not based on religion. It was secular and more organized. In the west, there was feudalism, where religion tied into the politics. Thhis created hostility in the west. Another aspect of culture that was different because of the split was art. In the east it was highly religous and decorative, while it was more simplistic in the west. Another difference was trade. The eastern half had more access to the middle east and Asia, which is how the eastern ideas were brought to Byzantine. The west on the other hand, was behind in advancements due to lack of a large trade network to the east. Finally, conquest was a major difference. In the east, there was fear of invasion from the muslims and mongols, which made the east more protective, while in the west the problems were more internal with the barbarians. All these factors made the east and west very different
There are 3 major differences between Eastern and Western Europe during the Byzantine Empire. These were: religion, art, and trade. The East didn’t recognize the pope and divided government and religion, but had highly religious and decorative art. They had a widespread access to trade and traded across the Mediterranean Sea, to the Russians, Asians, and Muslims. However, the West recognized the pope, incorporated government into religion, and had simplistic art. This simplicity was due to lack of resources, and ultimately a lack of a large trade network. The themes of reigion, art, and trade differentiated the East and West parts of Europe, making them separate and distinct.
The east and west were different in many ways during the Byzantine Empire. Both regions had differences between Christianity. The east did not have a Pope, whereas the west did. Also, the western politics were influenced by the religion. The east had a clear separation between the churches and the state. Priests also differed in the regions. In the east the priests were not allowed marry, where they could in the west. The Government was different in the east and west. In the east they had a bureaucracy, and was very organized. And in the west, there was feudalism. In the east the trade routes were much more extensive, they traded with Asia, Russia, Scandinavia, and the Middle East. The trade brought wealth, and an influence of culture. Also, food, resources, and other ideas were traded.
There were many differences between Eastern and Western Europe during the time of the Byzantine Empire. These differences include religion, government, and trade. Both eastern and western Europe practiced Christianity with different variations. In the west, politics were influenced by religion, in contrast to the east where there was a clear separation between the church and the state. Also, the east did not accept the pope as their leader where as the west did. Lastly, priests could not marry in the east but could in the west. Another primary difference between eastern and western Europe was their ideas on government. The east composed of a bureaucracy, which was orderly and organized. However, the western government practiced feudalism. Trade was another primary element that differentiated east from the west. The eastern trade route was much more extensive. It consisted of Asia, Russia, Scandinavania, and the Middle East. Through trading with these countries, eastern Europe was able to increase in wealth, and influence culture. They were also able to adopt new ideas and gain resources. However, western Europe did not have such advantages due to their less extensive trade route.
Eastern and Western Europe had many differences during the time of the Byzantine Empire. The major differnces were in their religion, trade, and art. The differnce between the East and West religiously was the west based their religion on the pope. The East on the other hand did not recognize the pope. The west didn’t believe the pope was important, and the pope was a very important figure to the people in the east. Although both East and West had the same catholic orthodox religion, this caused a split between the two. Because of the splits in government and religion between the two, their arts also were seperate. Western art was more simplistic than Eastern art. Eastern art was very decorative, extravagant, and religious. Because of the separation between the East and the west, trade also became separte. The East was able to trade with major surrounding civilizations such as China and Persia. This lead to them being richer than the West. The West didn’t have as many resources because their location wasn’t ideal for trading. Because religion, art, and trade was very different in the East and the West, they became seperate.
The major distinction between Eastern Europe and Western Europe is the difference in religion. As mentioned in class, “religion splits Europe”. The Byzantine Empire was separated into two parts; the east side was Greek, and the west side was Roman. As both cultures had beliefs in catholic orthodox, the East did not acknowledge the Pope. So they branched off of the West, in turn creating two of their own branches of Christianity: Eastern Orthodox and Roman Catholic. In the East, the form of government did not rely on religion. It relied solely on political matters such as social classes and such. In the West, the form of government was secular; government in the West did not rely on religion. They partook in feudalism. Many can argue that a big difference between Europe is art, but art was affected by religion and government. As Europe split, Eastern Europe created its own form of government, and the West maintained its secular form of government. The East flourished economically, as the West did not prosper as well. This was very evident in the paintings and art of the opposing sides. Eastern art was very elaborate, containing gold leaf, and very intricate details to the characters and portraits. This symbolized the economical prosperity of the East. Western art was more simplistic, and less detailed. Sculptures and paintings had less emotion, and less detail, showing the economic struggle the West tried to hide. Although art and religion were affected by the split, so was trade. As the nation split, trade with different empires arose. The East traded with the two big empires at the time, China and India. Having such reluctant trade connections, the East flourished in trade. The West, however, did not have such ties. The West traded with various and numerous Germanic tribes. They did not do so well, and once again the prosperities and struggles of the East and West carried over into art. The East continued to have very elaborate, fine paintings, while the West maintained its basic, simplistic art. Much can be said about the split of Europe, but it can all be summarized into three words: Religion, Art and Trade.
The east an west empires in Europe at the time of the Byzantine Empire differed primarily in a cultural sense, but also from a trading standpoint. The one major cultural aspect that identified these two empires separate was religion. Although both east and west practiced Christianity, there were several specific variations that set the two apart. In the case of the west, they acknowledged the Pope as both a religious and political leader, presenting a direct tie between religion and government. On the other hand, the eastern empire clearly separated church and state, making relgion and government two clear-cut aspects of society. Another cultural element that helped to differentiate between the two empires was religious representation through art. The east artistically represented religious figures in an elaborate manner, for example, showing them in fine clothing, wearing halos and surrounded by gold. The western empire got the same message across through their art in a more subtle fashion. Mediums other than gold were used and more attention was paid to finer detail. Facial expressions were often more peaceful.
Trade is another theme that separated the west empire from the east. The east, being much larger and powerful, had a much more advanced economy, bringing in more wealth and goods. This is largely in part to their convenient location in relation to trade routes along the Mediterranean. The western empire, being much smaller and in a not so stratregic location, did not experience the full benefits of a successful trading economy.
The mahor differences between the eastern and western empires were religion, culture, and trade. In the west, the church was very much based and centered around the pope, whereas the east did not recognize the pope at all. In the east, priests were forbidden to marry, but they were able to marry in the west. There was the separation between church and state in the east, yet the western religion influenced the politics. Some aspects of culture were also different between the east and west. The east used more vibrant and sophisticated materials, and represented things in a vibrant and sophisticated way throough their art. In the west, the materials were less vibrant and sophisticated. Government was also different, because in the east, there was a beauraucracy, but the west was feudal. Trade was different in each because the east had a much longer and extensive route, which reached to Scandinavia, the Middle East, Asia, and Russia. The better trade route allowed the east to adapt new ideas and import certain recources. This differed from the west, which had a much less extensive trade route.
The fall of Rome and the rise of the Byzantine Empire led to a split between the east and west. The regions differed mainly in culture and religion which was expressed through their different ways of life. The west was made up of barbarians fighting for power over Europe. This barbaric way of life caused culture to severely drop, trade to come to a standstill, and expansion to stop completely. These Middle Ages were an age of feudalist government where there were so many leaders fighting for power, none of them truly had any. In the east were the remaining descendents of Rome, the Byzantines. Their Roman based culture was what differed them from barbarians. They practiced christianity like the barbarians, but it did not affect the beaurocratic government like the religion ruled over the west. Eastern conquest was based on maintaining territory. They had to protect it from barbarians, and the Muslim invaders. Trade was also a key factor in the east. They traded with the Russian territories north to south which led to trade with Scandinavia. This helped culture flourish in the east while it slowly diminished in the west. The arts were important in both cultures, but differed because of religious beliefs. the western christianity was expressed without as much elegance as it was in the east. The more wealthy Byzantines used bright and vivid colors and depicted people in a sad, more fatalist manner. The west expressed their religion with simpler materials, but with more cheerful demeanors. These differences between the east and west was caused by the rise of the Byzantine Empire which split the churches of Christianity.
The East and West of the Byzantine Empire were very different in culture, conquest, and trade which led to their seperation. One of their main differences was the religion they practiced. Christianity was split into Eastern Orthodox, which was practiced in the East, and Roman Catholicism, which was practiced in the West. In the East, the pope did not rule and the government was secular and a beurocracy. This meant that religion and politics remained separate. On the other hand, the West was ruled by the pope and religion effected the government which was a feudalism. In addition, trade also influenced the seperation in the Byzantine Empire. The East had the ability to trade with large empires such as China,India, and Scandinavia, while the West only had the ability to trade with smaller networks around Germany. This caused the East to advance faster and become a stronger empire due to their large amount of ideas and resources.
If one were to look at the main differences between the east and west part of the Byzantine empire, one would notice that there are quite a few differences. One major difference would be in the trade patterns. The East empire, had more trade, put simply. They, the east, had better acces to the surrounding land of other empires, and cultures, and this promoted more trade. Another difference is that the East empire is not as thick on the griund. What I mean is that their part of the empire is more spread out, and this might reflect the conquest of the Byzantium empire. To someone new to the topic, it looks as if the eastern part of the empire had a harder time gaining what land they could, and settled for little strands of ladn instead of one solid piece. Another factor that might have affected them was that the east had the Medeteranian empire right in their”way”. These were the major differences between the east and west part of the Byzantine Empire.
There were many differences between Eastern and Western Europe during the Byzantine Empire time period. The two main themes that could easily be distinguished were trade and culture.
The trading between Eastern and Western Europe were vastly different. Westerners had trading routes with other European countries including parts of the Mediterranean. They also traded with Asia a little bit. However, the east traded only in a direct north to south route which spread over the Russian territories and Scandinavia. Other trading partners included the Middle East and other parts of Asia. The differences in the trade affected their resources, wealth, ideas, food and the economy. These factors led to the difference between them including cultural differences.
The aspects of culture and the display of culture is seen much differently between Eastern and Western Europe. There were variations of Christianity in both. There was more enforcement of culture in the east. For religious practice, there was a separation between the church and the state. Priests could marry. The east put high discipline on Christianity. In contrast, the west was more basic and priests could not marry. The government of the east was very organized while the west was more focused on feudalism with few rulers in absolute power. The art was based on religion and because the religion was stricter in the east, it correlates to the fact that the art work in Eastern Europe was much richer and displayed signs of wealth and devotion to the relgion.
In conclusion, the major themes of trade and culture heavily influenced and differentiated between Western and Eastern Europe.
Some of the major differences between Eastern and Western Europe during the time of the Byzantine Empire were within religion, government, and trade. Eastern and Western Europe both practiced different variations of Christianity. Unlike Western Europe, Eastern Europe did not accept the pope as their leader. Also, in Western Europe politics where directly effected by religion and the church. On the other hand, in Eastern Europe, politics were separate from religion and the church. The final distinct differennce between the Eastern variation of Christianity and the Western variation of Christianity was in the East preists could marry, where as in the west they could not. The Eastern and Western art were affected greatly by their religion as well.
Government was also different in Eastern Europe than it was in Western Europe during the time of the Byzantine Empire. In Eastern Europe there was a beurocracy where there is a ruler and many other people who help run the government. In Western Europe the government was feudalist and consisted on one king with multiple lords below runing their teritiories.
Trade also varied between the East and the West. The Eastern trade route was much more extensive and brought wealth to Eastern Europe. The East traded with Asia, Russia, Scandanavia, and the Middle East. The West’s trade route was much less extensive and therefore brought less. Through trade the East became wealthy and their culture was influenced. Some of the cultural aspects that were influenced were food, resources, and ideas.
During the time of the Byzantine Empire, the differences between eastern and western europe were very clear. These differences were evident through culture, conquest and trade. The east at the time was still trying to hold on to their culture and trade. They were still trying to practice and bring back what was left of the Roman Empire. In the west, the people were barbaric. Their culture declined, their trade was at a stand still and no expansion occured. There was a difference in perspective in terms of christianity between the east and west. A split between the churches occured because of a disagreement. This division reflected the different patterns of development that the two civilizations followed. In the east, christianity was practiced and in the west, the pope ruled. The east maintained their land from barbarians and the west didn’t expand as mentioned earlier. Also, they traded through trade routes that were established in the Byzantine Empire from north to south as well as Scandinavian countries, while the west kept to themselves. Though, the east made an effort to keep alive, both declined in the end.
The differences between east and west segments of the Byzantine Empire are found in the themes of government, trade, and religion. The governments of East and West regions of the Empire were very different from each other. The East practiced a beauracracy which was neat and well-thought out, whereas the West practiced feudalism. Trade was important to both regions of the empire, east and west. The eastern trade route was far more extensive due to its location near Asia, Russia, the mediterranean and northern Europe. The Western region had far less of an advantage in terms of location and trade routes. In terms of religion, both East and West regions of the empire practiced Christianity. however there were differences. The West side of the empire showed direct influence by religion on government, whereas the eastern half did not. The pope was recognized as a leader in the west, but not at all in the east. The Byzantine empire influenced the rest of Europe and shared its culture with surrounding areas.
The main two differences between the east and the west are culture and conquest. Christianity one of the cultural differences. Eastern Christianity was darker. There was no pope. This made there be a seperation between church and state. The west was highly influenced by religion and the pope. Eastern military was focussed on defense. They were often attacked by Turks, and concentrated on maintaining their land. In the west, expanding the empire was the focus. The east also had a large trading network, which kept its economy alive, and it culture flourishing.
The East and West sides of Europe during the Byzantium Empire were divided because of culture and trade. Included in culture is religion, government and art. East and west had a different outlook on the Christian religion. The East had a darker outlook on life differing to the West who focused on the more positive side of Christianity. The east had no pope and their government was separate from their religion. Eastern Europe was also the Byzantium Empire. The west was run by a mix of religion and government, both of which were led by the pope. The priests could also marry in the east. In the government, Eastern Europe was well organized. Western Europe was run by barbarians in a feudal system. The art of both sides was directly resulted from the religion and the people’s outlook of life. The pictures of Jesus Christ made the prophet look sad in Eastern Europe. The trade also resulted in the division between East and West Europe. The East had a more extensive trade route and brought in more wealth to the people. The East traded with Asia, Russia, Scandinavia, and the Middle East. More wealth was brought in. The culture of the East was influenced by the food, resources and ideas of their trading partners. The west mainly traded with themselves and the result was a less advanced culture. Eastern and Western Europe were divided during the time of the Byzantium Europe from the culture and trade.
There were several differences between the west and east during the Byzantine Empire. These differences include culture, government, and trade. Both the west and east practiced Christianity but had different variations to the religion because of their personal access to the pope. The east did not have the opportunity to have the Pope close to them because the Pope was located in the west. The west practiced Roman Catholicism and the east practiced Eastern Orthodox. The art of the east and west differed in the materials and the complexity that the pieces portrayed. The west had simple art made out of cheap materials such as stone. The east had vibrant art that was made out of gold and other expensive materials. The art of these cultures was influenced by their religion. The east had a Bureaucratic government whereas the west had a monarchy. In the east, church and politics were not connected, and priests could marry. However, in the west politics were connected to church and the priests could not marry. Trade was also a significant difference between Eastern and Western Europe. The east had a wide range of trade, which allowed them to advance culturally and technologically. The east had trading routes in Asia, Russia, Middle East, and the northern parts of Africa. The west was unable to advance because they had a weak range of trade. The differences between the west and east through culture, trade and government signify the division between Eastern and Western Europe during the Byzantine Empire.
There were many major differences between Eastern and Western Europe during the time of the Byzantine Empire. These major differences included religion, government, art, and trade. The East and West’s cultures differed. The major difference between the two was that they had varying types of Christianity. In the East, people did not follow the Pope and his ideas. The East had in general, a more relaxed religious philosophy, and allowed their priests to marry. In Western Europe, Christianity centered on the Pope, and Christians followed all of his views. In the West, the religion was generally more strict, and the priests could not marry (they were completely devoted to God). The two places also had contrasting government structures. The East kept church and politics separate. The East of the Byzantine Empire had an organized, well structured, bureaucratic system. On the other hand, in the west of the Byzantine Empire church played a major part in politics. Also, the West had a Feudalistic government, similar to the vassal system in China. One final cultural difference was the art of the two regions. In the East, they showed their superior wealth in their art, with vivid colors, details, and rich resources. As in the West, the art was more basic, bland, and less detailed. The difference in wealth from the two areas came from their difference in trade. The East had a very extensive trade route to Asia, the Middle East, Russia, and Scandinavia. Trade produced the East with new ideas, wealth, food, and resources. The West did not benefit from these products because they were in a bad location, unlike the East, who were located on the Mediterranean Sea. The East and West of the Byzantine Empire differentiated because of religion, government, art, and trade. These differences made the East wealthier more advanced, more structured, and superior to West.
The East and West of Europe was left divided due to reasons such as trade, religion, and conquest. The Byzantine Empire was more open to trade than the barbarian nations of early western Europe. The Byzantine traded with the Russians quite often and were thus able to bring in new resources into their empire. They then expanded their trading partners to include scandinavia. The religious differences were vast. The East had a more dark and jaded look on Christianity than the forgiving Christian ideas of the West. They also believed in different Popes. The West had their’s in Rome and the East in Constantinople. They had bitter disputes between each other about their beliefs. The final example of how they are divided is conquest. The West had a more protective nature who were only concerned with their well being. The East always were on the attack trying to obtain more and more land with no rest or time for technological advances. In conclusion, the East and the West were divided because of religion, government, and conquest.
In the Byzantine Empire, and Europe of the time, the east and west were seperated by religious ideas, trade manners, and conquest methods. In the East, there was little orginization, and conquest was not the primary focus of the culture. They were considered a Barbaric backward people by those citizens who belonged to the Byzantie Empire. They had many different political and religious views, causing frequent wars and very little trade to occur. However, the Byzantine Empirre was much more organized. They had a well defined religion, namely Christianity, which was practiced throughout most of their empire. Frequent trade occured with the Arabic and Islamic people, who were their neighbors. And, they attampted to re-conquest the land to their east, in an attempt to recreate the Roman Empire. This people strongly believed themselves to be the descendents of the Romans, and these beliefs set them apart from the people to their east. They were more civilized, and had a distinctively different outlook on their life.
